Flowers can add a beautiful touch to your wedding. Sometimes though, a florist can be hard to find. Good florists will be booked, so make an early appointment, and aim for six months prior to your wedding date. To get a good head start, ask the venue you are holding your reception at if they can recommend a few florists for you. Remember that some locations will only accept specific florists into their venues, so ask before you start looking.

If this doesn’t work, ask your family and friends for their recommendations. Get ahold of any friends whose weddings you’ve attended and whose floral arrangements caught your eye. Ask them if the florist made planning easy, and if they were easy to work with.

After you’ve compiled a good list of names, call each florist to get an estimate of what they charge for their work, and set appointments to go see examples of some of their arrangements. Many respectable florists won’t give a price quote over the phone. Once you make an appointment to meet with the florist, bring a few pieces of fabric from the dresses your bridesmaids are going to wear. This way the florist can customise a floral arrangement based on your colours and what types of flowers to use.

It’s always a good idea to hire a florist who has previously worked at the same venue you are holding your ceremony or reception at. This will help the florist in knowing which arrangements will work, and which ones won’t. Good florists will use many different mediums. For instance, they may use candles, chair covers, or other non-floral materials.

So, when you come to a decision about which florist to use, remember that you may want to inquire about these items:

  • Bridal bouquet
  • Bouquet to throw at the reception
  • Bouquet for your Maid of Honor
  • Bouquets for each bridesmaid
  • Groom’s corsage
  • Best Man’s corsage
  • Ushers’ corsages
  • Corsages for the parents of the bride and groom
  • Basket for flower girl
  • Corsage and ring pillow for ring bearer
  • Aisle decorations
  • Decorative candles
  • Centrepiece arrangements
  • Cake table arrangements
  • Fresh flowers for your cake
  • Ceremony and reception chair covers

Don’t be hesitant to request exactly what you want and don’t let a florist intimidate you into telling you what you need. Also, don’t be afraid to haggle on the price. Ask the florist exactly how much the flowers that you want will cost. Does the price include delivery and setup, or are there additional fees? Has the florist worked in the banquet hall you are using before? If they have, which kinds of centerpieces are recommended?

Different types of flowers may be accessible to you, depending on the season. Be sure to ask your florist about what flowers will be in season on your wedding date.

Ask to see a list of references, or to view the florist’s work samples. Upon hiring your florist, draw up a contract together of everything that will be supplied at your event.

Planning a wedding can become overwhelming, and choosing a good florist is no exception, except you can make it quite likeable. Have fun and remember to enjoy yourself!
